My Contributions

Research

I conducted interviews and compiled research

Wireframing

I used Figma to wireframe our website

Coding

I coded part of our final website using HTML and CSS

Project Overview

The purpose of this project was to create a website that solves a problem within a community

Stakeholders

The internal stakeholders affiliated with this project are high school students. The external stakeholders affiliated with this project would be high schools.

User Group

High school students who are in need of a study environment and/or a study group.

Interview Research

GOAL

To find out if local high schools offer proper and effective tutoring opportunities to their students.

PROCESS

Our team spoke to two staff members from different schools.

  • McCutcheon High School

  • The Excel Center

TAKEAWAYS

  • Students may not have rides to get to tutoring

  • Schools may not offer tutoring for after-school hours

  • Students may not feel comfortable attending in person

Co-Design Activity

GOAL

To better understand our user group and to gain more information on how they feel about tutoring.

PROCESS

One of our team members was able to meet up with a local high school student to create an empathy map.

TAKEAWAYS

  • Create an inviting website experience

  • Implement a scheduling feature based on study groups

  • List various courses in the scheduling feature

We decided to change our mind...

After our team compiled more interviews and research we decided to change our focus slightly

More Interview Research

GOAL

We wanted to gain a better perspective.

PROCESS

We interviewed 3 high schoolers.

TAKEAWAYS

  • Age gap between student and tutor causes discomfort

  • Students want to bounce ideas off one another

  • Group study sessions allow users to feel comfortable

These takeaways showed us that creating a website that is flexible and catered to a student's preference for academic help is where our focus needed to be.

Research

TAKEAWAYS

  • Students want to feel comfortable when studying with others

  • More than 60% of students learn more when in study groups than when studying alone

  • 70% of students have increased motivation when studying in groups

These takeaways aided our team in making a research-based decision to design a website where users can create study groups instead of finding a tutor.

So what is our design?

After our team compiled research and conducted interviews, we decided to create a website where high school students could schedule (and facilitate) study sessions

Solution

P1_1(192).png

This screen shows our home page showcasing

  • Various courses available to students

  • A calendar showing already created study sessions students can join

  • A view of various study sessions available for "Today"

Once a student finds a study session they want to join they can join it by selecting the navy blue box

This screen appears where a student can fill out a form that includes their name, role (student or facilitator), format they prefer (in-person or online)

The student then clicks the blue "Submit" button and a notification appears notifying the student their form was submitted

If a student would like to create a study session, they can click the blue "Create" button

The student then can fill out this form by typing in their name, role, format, subject, and time of the study session

The student then can submit the form by clicking the blue "Submit" button

Limitations

There were some limitations to our project that are listed below...

No User Testing

We did not conduct any user testing for our website. This would have allowed our team to test our design to see how we could improve upon it.

Limited Research

We did not conduct as much research as we would have liked. We only conducted 6 interviews in total which may not represent our user group appropriately.

Limited Knowledge

Our team had limited knowledge on how to use HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. This limited our capabilities to design an aesthetically pleasing design.
